Dr. Bharat Dahiya is Senior Advisor to the Environment, Development and Sustainability Program at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. An award-winning Urbanist, he combines academic research, policy analysis and development practice aimed at examining and tackling current social, economic, environmental and governance issues at multiple geographical scales. He holds a PhD in Urban Governance, Planning and the Environment from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Since early-1990s, Dr. Bharat’s research and professional work has focused on sustainable urbanization, and sustainable, resilient and green cities. During this work at the World Bank, UN-Habitat, the Asian Development Bank, UNDP, and United Nations University, he initiated, led, managed and contributed to technical assistance and operational projects on sustainable urban development in a number of countries around the world.


At UN-Habitat, Dr. Bharat conceptualized and coordinated the United Nations’ inaugural report on The State of Asian Cities 2010/11. At the World Bank, he co-authored a book, Urban Environment and Infrastructure: Toward Livable Cities. His latest co-authored book, Partnering for Sustainable Development Guidelines for Multi-stakeholder Partnerships to Implement the 2030 Agenda in Asia and the Pacific, published by United Nations University and UN-ESCAP in 2018 focuses on SDG 17. In recent years, Dr. Bharat has held several academic positions: Visiting Professor at the School of Government and Public Policy (Indonesia), Visiting Research Fellow at Curtin University (Australia), Visiting Researcher at Chulalongkorn University, and Adjunct Faculty at the Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand).

Dr. Bharat is Series Editor for the Springer book series, Advances in 21st Century Human Settlements (http://www.springer.com/series/13196). Three of the seven books published in the Series are indexed in Web of Science.
