Chulalongkorn University (CU) was officially established in March 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) and named after his father, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who laid the foundations for modern education in Thailand.

Originally established with only four faculties, the university now covers the entirety of academic disciplines, with a total of 19 faculties, nine institutes, three colleges and one school offering 506 programs, 113 undergraduate and 393 graduate. Of these, 87 programs are international. Throughout the past century, CU has served as the country’s main institution for higher education. It has educated over 300,000 quality graduates in various fields, many of whom have assumed positions of leadership in government, public administration and private organizations. Some of these graduates have become experts in global issues, such as the first Thai doctor of medicine to hold a position in the World Health Organization. A total of 191 outstanding researchers have received national awards from three main research institutes.

In its second century, CU is focusing on four strategies of development—human capital, knowledge & innovation, social transformation and global benchmarking. These strategies have contributed to the development of critical action platforms. CU cooperates and collaborates with the government, public sectors and regional as well as international bodies to address social and ecological issues. It also encourages action-oriented academic research efforts, with which it is hoped will bring Thai and international research scholars and practitioners together to tackle regional and global issues.

In living up to its vision, mission and values, CU has been globally recognized, ranked as the top university in Thailand and listed in the top 50 Universities in Asia as per the QS World University Rankings 2018 (released on 28 February 2018). In addition, the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2017 has placed CU as the second best green university in Thailand and 90th in the world as Chulalongkorn University continues to develop into a leading global university with an Asian perspective and public purpose.
